We are providing a series of nine half-day workshop sessions for the Phipps leadership team. Click on the dropdown arrow in the sidebar to see the resources from each training day that has been completed.
Gain an overview of the work we’ll be doing together over the course of our workshop sessions. How do you engage students in the afterschool program context? How can you empower students to play an active role in their learning, and create efficacy in them to succeed in school and life? Dig into the aspects of equitable learning environments and discover the role that executive function plays in student success.
In these times, we know that students are struggling to get not only their academic needs met, but also their social and emotional needs as well. An equitable environment is built upon relationships. What role does an afterschool program play in meeting these needs? How can you set up your remote/hybrid learning environment to help students feel connected and to foster academic achievement?
Imagine a student who needs help. Imagine instead of waiting for help to arrive, that student opens a digital "Help Board," adds his/her name, then moves on to another task, knowing that you’ll check in as soon as you can. The structure enabled the student to keep going and keep learning. Let’s explore a range of structures that foster executive function and growth in students!
You have many different needs represented in the students you support. Some have different learning styles, some speak another language as their first language, and some may be classified with different specific needs. We want to ensure that we utilize our time and that of our co-teachers or other adults to meet these needs and give all students more than equal support - equitable support!
Did you know that in the past decade, 467 species were declared extinct? What if your students heard this fact? Would they be curious? Invested? Outraged? Imagine that the next research and writing assignment allowed them to explore this problem and to share their learning and opinions to an audience of friends, family, or even the world! Help students to see the connections between learning and their lives, and watch them find their voice.
Empowered students are positioned to play an active role in their school success, and one day in the world. Experience a range of discussion protocols and norms that empower students to think critically and voice their thoughts together with peers, building skills of discourse, empathy, and self-reflection.
Cultural responsiveness provides a backdrop of cognitive safety and empowers learners. In this session, we will draw connections between this lens and many of the tools and topics we have previously explored. Look at discussion protocols, student choice, SEL ideas, and more, seeking to infuse cultural responsiveness throughout.
Technology has been a life-saver in the past months. It has enabled us to connect, to learn, to entertain ourselves, or to see the world. Over the past 7 sessions, we have used a host of new tech tools. Now, let’s take a look at the power of these tools not just to automate learning, but to transform it into new capacities.
We’ve covered a lot of ground together! We’ve tried many new tools, gathered ideas, seen the impact upon our students. On this last day together, we’ll take time to reflect, self-assess, celebrate gains, and set some new goals for the coming year.
